March 2nd. We are getting ready for the summer series. Still not sure where we will be racing but we will keep you posted. Since Bartman has moved up, we now need to take our quad along to get him going. So, we are selling our current trailer. It's an Interstate 16' enclosed trailer. It is set up for racing with racks, cabinets with a work space. We are asking $4500 the way it sits or $4200 without the cabinets and racks. If you are interested give Greg a call at 541-890-4601 or email us. See you at the races !!!!
February 20th. The last race weekend of the season. It has been a great season for the Bartman. Our goal in Salem was for him to get used to his new kart and learn to drive it like he did his Briggs. Mission Accomplished!! Now he wants more speed. This weekend he had some good finishes. He took a 3rd in a heat on Sunday. There were several wrecks with karts tangled up and on their tops. Luckily, Bartman managed to manuever his way thru unscathed. We are all really proud of him and his improvement. Through out this season we have had more than our share of technical difficulties. It has been a huge learning experience for all of us. The kart is handling great and barty is comfortable driving it. We would like to thank our fellow racers in Salem. They were all very quick to offer their help and advice when had problems with the kart. The officials were very helpful as well. We were also lucky enough to have most of our family at every race. A special thank you to MARK THOMAS MOTORS, TANGENT SEED LAB AND GAME TIME. You are great sponsors and we appreciate your continued support. We are not sure who is promoting the Southern Oregon Track. So, it is still up in the air whether or not we will be racing the series. Sutherlin will be having a series this summer, maybe will see you there. Bartman really wants to race Cycleland in Chico, so we may try to get in a race there as well. You just never know where we might show up.
January 20,2010. HAPPY NEW YEAR !!!! I know it's alittle late but we have been having technical difficulties (10 year old computer). There is much to talk about. Finally got the 125 together, so the Bartman could move out of the Briggs class! There will be pics posted of his new kart for your viewing pleasure. Parker Jones from Jones Bros Racing did a great job on the vinyl. Thank You !!! We are racing the Indoor series this winter in Salem. Missed the first race because the Kart wasnt quite ready. First of all, let me say, Salem has a really nice track and run a good program. We really enjoy racing there. Just wish it wasnt so far. Lucky for us, we have family in Albany, so we stay with them and have that quality family time. Our first event was December 5th and 6th. We were all really nervous, but Barty was ready to go. He had a rough start. Driving a 125 is alot different than his Briggs so he was just getting a feel for the kart. He hit the wall in a heat race and did some damage. That's ok, it's racin. We were all very happy with Barty's driving. One of the officials was nice enough to take Bartman in the infield during the 250 race and gave him some pointers. I think it helped. He did better after that, was able to keep the kart on the track. The crew is learning as well, it is like starting all over. We are racing this winter so Bartman can learn how to drive this kart as good as he drove his Briggs. We are very proud of him and his progress. We raced New Years weekend and had one problem after another( tie rods, throttle cable and engine trouble). When we got home the kart went straight to Richard, our engine builder. Picked it up last weekend and it is dialed in a ready to go. Our next race is this coming weekend. Stay tuned for more updates.
August 21st. Finally, the last points race of the season. It has been a tough season for our team. The track has a new promoter this year and with that come a lot of growing pains. Coming into this race we were 6 points away from 3rd place. The lap counters and women that worked in the tower have all been replaced. (You can read all about it on the so-outlaws and southern oregon speedway message boards.) Everyone was concerned since we rely on transponders to keep things in line. This race would determine several championships. For instance, our class had a 3 point difference between 1st and 2nd. Barty took 2nd in his heat and won his second Trophy dash this season. The Bartman didn't have a very good main event. He started off pretty good but something happened and he came off the track. That would cost him a position in the points. Read on and I will explain why. Barty was securely 4th in points. There was more than 30 points separating him from the 5th place kart. Since this was such an important race as far as the championship was concerned tensions were high. Since the ladies that usually make the calls were not there, the infield officials and the flaggers were making the calls. That's the way it should be. The infield officials are more than fair and we respect their decisions. Remember, I had said in past races there was another kart that was always turning into other karts that were trying to pass. Well, it happened in a heat race and this kart was put to the back. The two karts involved were fighting for the championship. The call upset the drivers crew. Understandably so. In the main after Barty came off the track, we didn't finish watching the race to see the outcome. There has been a lot of talk all season questioning whether one of these karts were legal or not. So, the two teams agreed between the two of them to have their karts teched. This was not something the promoter had asked for but the parents of these kids agreed on their own. To make a long story short, both karts passed until a few days later we found that the kart that had won the championship had been disqualified for an illegal flywheel. If you read the message boards you will see that this too has been very controversial. Had Barty not come off the track and finished like he usually does that DQ would have put him 3rd in points, but he missed it by a couple of points. Lesson learned. We will not be attending the non points race on Sept 4th. We are heading to Riddle to try out a new track. We have had a good 4 years at the Southern Oregon Speedway but this will be the last season we race here. As I said before, there is a new promoter and we don't agree with the way he chooses to do things, so we feel it best to race elsewhere.
August 7th. We were hoping for a better night than last week. The night started off good, he qualified with a 10.599. The second fastest. He finished 2nd in his heat and in the dash. There was a kart here from out of town that wasn't legal for our track. They were not racing for points as we were. In the main event this kart finished 2nd and Barty 3rd. Because the kart wasn't legal barty got the second place points and trophy. It was a nice of good racing.
July 31st. Tonight proved to be bittersweet for the Bartman team. Barty had the fasted qualifying time for the night. It was also his fastest time EVER with a 10.565. A personal best. We were so excited. He ran a good heat race and finished 2nd. He did have the fastest lap in the heat as well. He had his first trophy dash win this season. Good Job Bartman. That was the sweet part. Now for the bitter part. We have a driver in our class that is know for turning into other karts to avoid being passed. This is no secret, anyone that has watched these kids race has seen it. Well, in the main event he turned into us between turns 2 and 3 causing a caution. They were both put to the back and after some input from the infield officials, the other kart was charged with the caution. The race continued. Both of these kids are good, aggressive drivers. They were fighting their way back to the front. This kart came into turn one too high, over corrected and shot down towards the bottom of the track. He left off the throttle and Barty was right on his bumper. When he let off barty bumped him. It was actually a perfect but unintentional pit maneuver. He spun out and Barty kept going. They threw the yellow and Scott the flagger came down off the flag stand with rolled up black flag in hand. He stopped Barty and told him he was getting the rolled up black flag for intentionally wrecking this other kart twice. Well, that was not the case as all. The other kart was charged with the first caution. We are more than ok with a rolled up black flag or even a black flag if it is just. However, someone made the decision to not only give barty a warning but put him in the back. Now, maybe that is normal procedure but in the 4 years we have race on this track, I have never seen it. So, now we have an upset driver that did NOTHING wrong and a very upset Father and crew. If you have been on the SO Outlaws website you have seen the home page with the "new " rule about not approaching anyone but Jack the promoter. So, we all went to look for Jack because that is what the rule says. Well, he wasn't available, our hands were tied. Barty got put to the back and had a respectable 4th place finish. The thing that puzzles me... There was a meeting after the races with Jack (the promoter), Scott (the flagger), Greg and Bart. Jack or Scott neither one, had a good reason why they gave him the rolled up black flag and put him in the back.
July 24th. Barty's Grandparents came down from Albany for the race tonight. It is Grandpa Dale's birthday tomorrow and he wanted to spend it with the Bartman. Barty had some trouble in qualifying. He only ran a couple of laps then pulled off the track. He felt there was something wrong with the Kart. Turns out it was nothing major. Thank goodness. He qualified 5th. Not bad for only 2 laps. He finished 3rd in the heat and 4th in the main. It was a good night. Mostly, because his grandpa was there. Barty didn't know for sure he would be there so he was pretty excited when he saw his Grandpa Dale walking into our pit. This was the first of our 3 in a row races. See you next week.
July 10th. Happy Birthday Aunt Susie. The night started off good with a qualifying time of 11.085. 2nd fastest. Didn't have such good luck in the heat race and finished 6th. In the main barty started front row inside next to #27. He is a great competitor. Barty managed to get out in front and stay in front. It was a real nail biter but the Bartman got his first main event win this season. It was an exciting race. This was also the first time this season they were teching the top finishers. We are glad to see them checking out the karts. We are always willing to put our kart up for tech. Cheating does nothing to teach these kids anything about sportsmanship and clean competition. Unfortunately, other parents don't feel this is an important quality to teach their children. Fortunately everyone passed tech. We have seen the faces of young drivers when the officials have to take their trophy because their parents wanted to win more than play by the rules. It is a very sad thing. We have 3 races in a row starting July 24. Hope to see you all there.
June 26th. Barty's Aunt Emily and Uncle Ryan just moved home from Maine. They were able to make it down from Albany to see the Bartman race. It was nice to have them there. The Bartman qualified 4th which put him in the Trophy Dash. He had a pretty good night. He didn't win the dash but that's ok. He took a respectable 2nd in his heat race with the fastest lap time of 10.960. Finished 4th in the main. There was a lot of family in the Pits and it was a good night at the races. See ya July 10th.
June19th. Barty was anxious to race tonight, since we were rained out last week. He qualified with the 2nd fastest time. Way to go Bartman !! The track was not in the best condition. Turn 4 was really rough. Turns 1 and 2 were slick. That's the way it goes. I guess we can't have perfection every time. With the weather we've had, we are lucky to race at all. Barty's heat race was ok. He had some handling issues between 2 and 3 and lost a position and finished 3rd. He ran in the trophy dash but came in 3rd as well. The main was pretty intense. There were several cautions which mean a lot of stopping and starting. He kept getting caught up in lap traffic. He had a respectable 5th place finish. I don't know if it is just the age group of these kids or what. It seems some of the drivers think they need to push, bang or crash their way to the front. It's pretty frustrating to watch.
May 29th. It was a perfect day for racing. Actually it was pretty hot. We got to the track early like usual. The pit meeting was good. They discussed new rules about approaching the flagger or other officials when you don't agree with a call they have made. I guess thats a big no no. There was also some discussion about rough driving in the novice and intermediate classes. These little kids are pretty aggressive. Barty is usually a clean driver, but I guess he had to test his boundaries. He had his fastest qualifying time ever, a 10.906. GO BARTMAN !! He made the Trophy dash with the 3rd fastest time. Then... came his heat race thats where it went bad. Barty was passing a kart on the bottom and got spun out. Yellow flag #1. Then for some reason unknown to the rest of us. Barty was behind a slower kart and instead of passing him, he pushed him out of the way. Yellow flag #2.. Then came the BLACK FLAG. It appears as though there is a 2 spin rule in heat races and 3 spin rule in the Main. In 4 years of racing at the southern Oregon speedway I have never seen the 2 spin rule enforced. We are all happy to follow the rules and are glad they are enforcing the rules they have put forth. It makes for better racing. It was a good lesson learned for the bartman. He started dead last in the main and managed to make his way to the front. He ran in 2nd place for awhile but ended up finishing 3rd. We are so proud of him. We are selling his Shorty from his days in Novice for $1500. If anyone is interested it is race ready. Call Greg @ 541-890-4601.
May 15th. Friday May 15th was our first points race. The one scheduled for May 1st was rained out. It is tentatively rescheduled for June 19th. We arrived at the track early. My dad and uncle greg set to work getting our pit set up and my kart ready to race. Bartman qualified 5th. Finished 3rd in my heat. It was a good race. Richard came by the pit and tuned my kart so I was ready to go. Barty started 2nd row inside behind the #1 kart. I tangled up with 26P on the start so we had to restart. It was pretty much downhill from there. After a couple of unsuccessful attempts to get the main going Barty 4b and 88 were moved to the front for the start. The race was finally underway and barty got pushed into the wall by another driver. He came off the track because he was having trouble steering. His pits crew got him back on the track. He was still having trouble, spun out a couple of times and ended up finishing 9th. Not the best night at the races but I guess a bad night racing is better than a good night doing anything else. Check out www.2uphoto.com for the latest race pics. See you all in 2 weeks.
April 17,2009. First race of the season is finally here. We got to the track early and saw a lot of familiar faces. There were quite a few new drivers as well. We had a brand new driver in our pit. Austin #48A in the novice class. He is also Greg and Shelly's nephew. This was his first time ever in the kart other than a few passes up and down the road. The night started off pretty good. Bartman qualified 4th, that put him in the Trophy Dash. He finished second in his heat. When it came time for the Dash the kart just fell flat. It was running a little too lean. We got that corrected and were hoping for a better finish in the main. Barty started off the main strong held 3rd place for awhile but spun out twice and finished in 6th place. Needless to say Bartman was not too happy. So, guess where Bart and Greg will be for the next two weeks? That's right... in the garage working on the kart. Lets hope for a better finish at the first points race May 1st. Hope to see you all there!
April 6,2009. Southern Oregon Speedway invited the Karts to their car show at Lava Lanes last Saturday. We managed to get the kart back together without a minute to spare. Our painter Allen stayed up all night to get it done. We sure appreciate all he has done for us over the last couple of years. Dan from Sign Dude put all the stickers on for us. Thanks Dan. We made it to the show just in time. It was a lot of fun. Bartley made the rounds sitting in Sprint cars and Sgt. Nelsons modified. We met a lot of really nice people. It was a fun event. Thanks to everyone that came out to see what we do. See you on April 17th for our first race. Only 11 more days and counting.....
The summer schedule is post, so mark your calendars. Southern Oregon Speedway has a new promotor this year. Welcome, Jack Waldon! The first race is a play day on April 17th. We hope to see all of our friends out there.
HAPPY NEW YEAR !!! Hope everyone had a happy holiday. Now that the holidays are behind us, we are focusing on getting ready for the upcoming summer series. Due to a wrecked kart we have been unable to race this winter. We are working on getting some sponsors and getting the kart ready to go. We are looking forward to a good season this year. We wish all of you a 2009 full of good times.
It is the end of another season at Southern Ore
gon Speedway. Barty moved up to the intermediate class this year. It was a rough season but he finished 5th in points. We are happy with that considering there were more than 20 karts. He had his first main event win at SO Speedway and 2 trophy dash wins this season. We are looking forward to next year. See you all there. Check back for winter racing updates.
10/26/08 We usually race Roseburg in the winter but this year we are going to see how we like the Salem track. Mark Thomas Motors in Albany is one of our major sponsors so we are going to try and race in their area when we can. We are still going to try to get in a few races in Roseburg if possible. Both schedules are posted and we will let you know where we are going and how we did.
